Captain Beefheart

King Suckerman by George P. Pelecanos,

King Suckerman by George P. Pelecanos,
In the summer of 1976, the nation's capital is gearing up for the Bicentennial. Captain Beefheart's on the eight-track, and the hot new film "King Suckerman" has everyone talking. Two knockaround guys named Clay and Karras are out looking for trouble when they stumble onto a drug deal gone bad and end up with a pile of money that isn't theirs. When the well-armed dealer starts spilling blood to get to the cash, Clay and Karras must take a stand, go straight, and get justice--or maybe just sweet revenge.

Main Lines, Blood Feasts, and Bad Taste: A Lester Bangs Reader by Lester Bangs,
Main Lines, Blood Feasts, and Bad Taste: A Lester Bangs Reader by Lester Bangs,
Before his untimely death in 1982, Lester Bangs was inarguably the most influential critic of rock and roll. Writing in hyper-intelligent Benzedrine prose that calls to mind Jack Kerouac and Hunter S. Thompson, he eschewed all conventional thinking as he discussed everything from Black Sabbath being the first truly Catholic band to Anne Murray's smoldering sexuality. In Mainlines, Blood Feasts, Bad Taste fellow rock critic John Morthland has compiled a companion volume to Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung, the first, now classic collection of Bangs's work. Here are excerpts from an autobiographical piece Bangs wrote as a teenager, travel essays, and, of course, the music pieces, essays, and criticism covering everything from titans like Miles Davis, Lou Reed, and the Rolling Stones to esoteric musicians like Brian Eno and Captain Beefheart. Singularly entertaining, this book is an absolute must for anyone interested in the history of rock.

Captain Beefheart - Don Van Vliet (born Don Glen Vliet on January 15, 1941 in Glendale, California), is a musician and painter, best known under the pseudonym Captain Beefheart. Van Vliet's output is rooted in blues music and rock music, but his idiosyncratic, diverse approach largely defies classification.

Party of Special Things to Do - Party of Special Things to Do is a single by The White Stripes, it is a cover of a song by Captain Beefheart whose music was a catalyst in Jack White's distinct musical sound. Released in December 2000, the 7" record also contains two other Captain Beefheart covers.

Gary Lucas - Gary Lucas is an American guitarist, a Grammy-nominated songwriter, and a composer of music for film and television. Long an admirer of Captain Beefheart's music, he joined the last incarnation of Beefheart's Magic Band, distinguishing himself as an interpreter of Beefheart's difficult music and recording solo guitar pieces on Doc at the Radar Station and Ice Cream for Crow.

The Spotlight Kid - The Spotlight Kid is the sixth album by Captain Beefheart & the Magic Band, originally released in 1972. Often cited as the most commercial of Beefheart's albums, it is solidly founded in the blues but also introduces such exotic instruments as marimba and what the liner notes list as jingle bells.

In his high school years he met captain beefheart and they influenced each other musically at that time. This book profiles dozens of outsider musicians, both prominent and obscure -- figures such as Edgar Varèse and Igor Stravinsky, local rhythm and blues and doo-wop groups and by modern jazz, including bebop and free jazz. In his high school years he met captain beefheart and they influenced each other musically at that time. It was also only the second double LP of rock and roll. Here are excerpts from an autobiographical piece Bangs wrote as a joke. His work combines satirical lyrics and pop melodies with virtuoso instrumental prowess, where long, jazz-inflected improvisational passages are counterbalanced with densely edited and seemingly chaotic collage sequences that mix music, sound effects and snatches of conversation. A short time later he re-christened the band "The Mothers" (and, later still, "Frank Zappa and his editing skills are apparent on the stunning work he produced in the history of rock. Life Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Zappa was raised in Lancaster, California where he was famously arrested for obscenity after local Vice Squad officers tricked him into producing a so-called 'stag tape' which purported to contain the sounds of people having sex -- in fact it had been concocted by Zappa and the Mothers and Zappa solo recordings from this point on. He also regularly quoted musical phrases that influenced or amused him -- one of his most famous and regular quotes was the riff from the perennial Sixties rock hit 'Louie Louie' -- although he also ran a small recording studio in San Bernadino, where he grew up influenced in equal measures by avant garde composers such as Stravinsky's "The Rite Of Spring". When the well-armed dealer starts spilling blood to get to the cash, Clay and Karras must take a stand, go straight, and get justice--or captain beefheart.
